In a continuing effort to improve and expand XITnet DSL service, XIT Communications will be upgrading the current system with new equipment. As a result, the way XITnet DSL customers connect will change.

The new system is scheduled to be implemented the week of August 7th, 2006.

When DSL first began being offered to XIT subscribers, DSL was a new technology just beginning to become affordable and desirable for the average computer user.   In time it has grown to become almost a necessity for business and personal life.   As technology grows and changes, so must XIT’s DSL service.   We are continuously upgrading and expanding the services we provide to our customers.

XIT DSL service currently requires users to log on to the internet with a username and password.   This type of connection is called PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet).   Originally, this required users to install a special program called WinPoET or MacPoET onto their computers.   Over the years PPPoE has become more standardized and is supported on most new operating systems by default.   However, PPPoE is still not the most efficient or reliable way to gain internet access.

Because of these issues, XIT is moving away from PPPoE.   The new way to connect will not require a username or password.   It will be a true “Always On” connection.   Once a subscriber has plugged their computer into XIT’s modem or cable box, the computer will automatically connect itself to the internet.   This type of connection is called DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol).   The username will still be required for retrieving e-mail, but no longer will it be required for web browsing.

The changeover to the new system will occur in stages.   This is to minimize the impact of the move, as well as to allow everyone to be prepared to make the change.   Please view our page for up-to-date details.

For most of XIT’s customers, nothing will need to be done.   DHCP is supported automatically by the majority of computers in use.   Once the change is made, the computer should begin using the new connection immediately.   It is possible that the computer may need to be rebooted.   At the time of the change, PPPoE will not work any longer.   Attempts to log in with a username and password will fail.

Routers and various other network devices will not automatically switch to DHCP.  These devices have to be configured manually.  Please refer to our articles on the page for instructions on how this can be done.

It has come to XIT’s attention that some subscribers have been configuring their Local Area Connections with incorrect information.  If any non-standard configuration has been added to the Local Area Connection on a PC, then DHCP may not work.  The article goes into more detail about this.  This does not apply if a router is being used.
